We are excited to welcome guests from America and Romania, as well as a few other countries around the world, to our wedding. Below are a few pointers on what you need, and tips on getting here.
Coming from Romania:
You’ll need a valid passport and a tourist visa in order to visit Canada. The government of Canada has a useful website that contains forms, information on processing, and a list of answers to frequently-asked questions. If you will be applying for this visa, please contact us and we will provide you with the host information you need to make your application.
Coming from the USA:
You will need one of the following three types of documentation to enter Canada:
- Valid passport
- Passport card
- Enhanced driver’s license (for residents of border states only)
If you need to obtain a passport, check out the US State Department’s website, which contains links to forms, processing centers and answers to FAQs.
Once You Have Your Documents…
Flying In: The easiest way for most people to get to Toronto is to fly. Air Canada, our national airline, services most world destinations (it is part of the Star Alliance), and offers many flights to Toronto from major European cities as well as most cities in the US (including NY-LaGuardia, Cleveland, Hartford, Boston). These days a round trip from one of these cities is about $400. Air Canada, and most other major airlines, fly into Toronto’s Pearson airport, a very big airport located about an hour outside of downtown Toronto.
If you are flying in from the New York or Chicago areas, you may consider flying with Porter Airlines, a small airline that provides an awesome quality of service at a great price. They fly out of Newark and Chicago’s Midway airports into a small airport on Toronto Island. It may be the only airline left where you pay under $500 for your seat, and still get to enjoy lunch (!) and a glass of wine (!) in a glass (!!).
Driving In: Toronto is about a 10 hour drive from New York City, 6.5 hours from Pittsburgh, and 10 hours from Chicago. If you’re planning to drive, leave an extra hour for your wait at the border, especially if you plan to cross later in the day (4 pm through about 8).
If you’re driving up via the Buffalo area, there are 3 border crossings available: the Peace Bridge (in Buffalo), the Rainbow Bridge (in Niagara Falls) and the Queenston-Lewiston Bridge (in Queenston-Lewiston) As we frequently visit Buffalo, we’ve found the border crossing delay hotline to be a godsend, as it will tell you the wait times for each crossing so you can determine the quickest way to get to the other side. Save it to your phone: 1-800-715-6722. It is updated every hour, on the hour.
